Golfers gather at Tinsley Park for Banning Cup.
Golfers from all over Sheffield gathered at Tinsley Park Golf Course over the weekend to take part in the prestigious Banning Cup Competition.
The competition was won by Tinsley Golf Club Member Carl Rennie who scored a combined nett 135 to take the title by 4 strokes.
Carl, with a handicap of 9, scored an impressive nett 62 in the morning round and followed it up with a nett 73 to clinch the silverware.
Home advantage was certainly apparent as second and third places were taken by Roger Montgomery (nett 74 + 65 = 139) and Gary Martin (nett 68 + 71 = 139), who are both Tinsley members.
M Fitzpatrick, member at Hallamshire GC, captured the Ledger trophy which is awarded to the player with the best 36 hole gross score.
Local competition was tough with Club member, Peter Craig, being the previous holder for the last two years and was this year attempting a Cup hat-trick but missed out on this years' title.
Tinsley Park's resident PGA Golf Professional Wayne Yellott said, ‘The course posed a great test for those taking part with the greens in fantastic condition. The Banning Cup is always a great event and it was a great day for the Club too taking the top three places, something that people will be keen to challenge next year.‘
‘People come from all over to play the competition and over the years there have been many golfers trying but it takes something different to clinch the Cup as the course always plays extremely well all year round but especially for the Banning Cup.'
The course operator, Sheffield International Venues Ltd (SIV), sponsored the event.
SIV runs two other golf courses in Sheffield - Beauchief and Birley Wood- plus Tapton Park, in Chesterfield, which deliver a total of more than 200,000 rounds per year.
